Description

If you’ve been immersed in a photography project and feel it’s time to shape it into a photobook, this workshop with Magnum photographer Rafal Milach and designer Ania Nałęcka-Milach is designed to help you experiment and understand the different creative pathways that a book can take.

Over five focused days, you’ll engage in hands-on exercises tailored to your existing body of work. Rafal will challenge you to see your images in new ways, introducing you to theory and guiding you through tasks like exploring specific archives, experimenting with quick assignments, and using text and typography to deepen your understanding of your own project.

This program offers:

  • Focused editing: Work closely with Rafal and your peers to narrow down your edit and learn more about the art of sequencing.
  • Interactive exercises: Engage in short assignments to open new perspectives on your work such as working with found material, searching the internet, and experimenting with writing.
  • Group collaboration: Group discussions and peer feedback will play a crucial role throughout the week. Together, you’ll explore ideas, learn about existing photobooks, and push each other’s creative boundaries.
  • Design exploration: Design is a key element for any photobooks. Rafal and Ania will introduce exercises that incorporate design principles, helping you think about layout, typography, and the overall aesthetic of your book.
  • Book dummy creation: The workshop will conclude with the creation of a draft book dummy for your project, turning theory into practice. This hands-on process will give you a tangible, personal keepsake of the experience, allowing you to see your work take shape in book form

By the end of the week, you’ll have a stronger, more focused body of work and a clearer vision for how to bring it to life as a photobook. Whether you’re aiming for self-publication or seeking a publisher, this workshop will equip you with the tools, insights, and confidence to move forward.

Tokyo Art Book Fair
This workshop will take place during the week of Tokyo Art Book Fair and will run alongside a workshop led by Cristina de Middel. Both photographers will give public talks during the week open to all workshop participants.
