Our partnership with Create Jobs

We are incredibly proud of the work our Education team has done in partnership with our colleagues at Create Jobs on the Creativity Works programme.

Magnum Photos is committed to fostering greater diversity and inclusion within our own organisation and the wider photographic industry. This programme is just one of the ways that we are seeking to actively meet this need.

As well as supporting 40 young adults aged 18-24 with free photographic training and career advice via the last two iterations of our programme, we have also offered two year-long, entry-level traineeships for people from under-represented or minoritized backgrounds. We are happy to continue our collaboration to diversify and broaden the scope of the Magnum workforce through our partnership with Create Jobs and continue to do so for years to come.

About the course

Magnum Photos is proud to partner with Create Jobs for a third year to offer a free 6-week photography course to young Londoners, aged 18 to 24 years old.

This intensive course provides a network for London’s young creative talent and equips them with the skills, knowledge and inspiration to tell stories that are important to them, that inform and impact social change. Through a range of practical workshops and activities, critique sessions and talks, twenty-five young Londoners will develop their own visual language and the skills required to understand photography’s ever-changing marketplace.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s Creativity Works programme will be delivered online, by Magnum photographers Newsha Tavakolian and Hannah Price. Tavakolian is a Magnum photographer based in Tehran, Iran. Price recently joined Magnum Photos as a Nominee and is based in the USA. Participants will work with them to develop a body of work for a virtual exhibition.

The deadline for applications is Thursday 1 October, 10am.

About Your Tutors

Newsha Tavakolian
Newsha Tavakolian is known for her powerful work covering wars in Iraq and social issues in her native Iran. With clarity and sensitivity, Tavakolian has photographed female guerilla fighters in Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria and Colombia, prohibited Iranian female singers and the lives of people living under sanctions. Over the years, her practice has shifted from photojournalism to photography as art.

A self-taught photographer, Tavakolian began working professionally in the Iranian press at the age of 16, at women’s daily newspaper Zan. At the age of 18, she was the youngest photographer to cover the 1999 student uprising, which was a turning point for the country’s blossoming reformist movement and for Tavakolian personally as a photojournalist; a year later she joined New York-based agency Polaris Images.

In 2003, she started working internationally, covering the war in Iraq. She has since covered regional conflicts, natural disasters and made social documentary stories. Her work has been published in international magazines and newspapers such as Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, Colors, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, NRC Handelsblad, The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic.

Her work has been displayed in dozens of international art exhibitions and has been on show in museums such as the Victoria & Albert, LACMA in and the British Museum, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art.

She became a Magnum member in 2019.

Hannah Price
Raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, Hannah Price (b. 1986) is a photographic artist and filmmaker primarily interested in documenting relationships, race politics, social perception and misperception. Price is internationally known for her project City of Brotherly Love (2009-2012), a series of photographs of the men who catcalled her on the streets of Philadelphia. In 2014, Price graduated from the Yale School of Art MFA Photography program, receiving the Richard Benson Prize for excellence in photography. Over the past eight years, Price's photos have been displayed in several cities across the United States, with a few residing in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
