Description

Are you about to embark on a personal photographic project and would like to review your ideas and approach with an expert? Do you have a long term project that you need help editing and sequencing? Are you a mid-career photographer struggling to figure out your photographic vision or where you are going next with your career?

This online portfolio review will help photographers identify their next step — from finding your photographic voice, to the process of discovering and making a long-term project that you’re passionate about, to practical advice on getting your work seen by the right people.

Each Magnum photographer will see 10 photographers only during this two-day event. Places will be allocated based on your application. Applications are free. The deadline for applications is July 8th. Applicants will receive an answer to their application by July 10th, 2020. The price of the online portfolio review is $350 (incl. tax) to be paid on acceptance of the application. The offer includes a “Preparing for a Portfolio Review” presentation and a 60 minutes one-to-one online portfolio review.  We will do our best to accommodate your timezone and schedule.

This 60-minute online portfolio review offers:

  • Guidance on technical, ethical, theoretical and aesthetic issues
  • Ideas Development
  • Editing and Sequencing
  • Workflow
  • Output and presentation
  • Professional Practice
  • Online Networking

I would like to discuss with you not just how strong your images are, but what new perspective you are offering of your chosen subject. Why are you making images, how does making these images impact you and the world beyond you, what is their place in the wider arena of photography? What choices have you made in terms of process and aesthetics, and why? I don't expect you to have all these answers, but these are the questions I’d like to discuss with you.

Carolyn Drake

About your reviewer

Carolyn Drake works on long term photo-based projects seeking to interrogate dominant historical narratives and create alternative and imaginative interpretations of reality. Her work explores community and the interactions within it, as well as the barriers and connections “between people, between places and between ways of perceiving”.

Drake was born in California and studied Media/Culture and History in the early 1990s at Brown University. Following her graduation from Brown, in 1994, Drake moved to New York and worked as an interactive concept designer for many years before departing to engage with the physical world through photography. Drake lived in Istanbul for nearly a decade, where she developed personal projects and worked on commissions in Turkey, Ukraine, Central Asia, and China. She was drawn to working in communities whose identities resist domination, where there is a drive to self define.
