Description

Magnum Learn is happy to offer four scholarships for photographers from the Balkan Peninsula for our program Inside >> Out, a six-day and six-night photographic immersion in Tirana, Albania with Mark Power, Bieke Depoorter, Newsha Tavakolian, Sohrab Hura, Jérôme Sessini, and Enri Canaj.

For the first time, six Magnum photographers will come together in one place and run different workshops in parallel with each other. While Newsha Tavakolian, Jérôme Sessini and Enri Canaj will help develop your shooting skills, Mark Power, Bieke Depoorter, and Sohrab Hura will teach the foundations of editing and bookmaking. Regardless of your mentor, you will also have the opportunity to hear presentations from all six Magnum photographers, and exchange with them.

By collaborating with and learning from Magnum photographers and their peers, participants will develop their personal photographic practice, improve their storytelling skills, foster lasting professional connections, and create a network of like-minded photographers with converging interests and photographic approaches. Participants will be encouraged to actively take part in group discussions and should be open to receiving feedback both from Magnum photographers and their peers.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned how to respond to a photographic brief, improve their editing and sequencing skills, engage in constructive criticisms, and develop a clearer idea of who they are as storytellers.

Prerequisites / Eligibility*

Applications are open to photographers from the Balkan Peninsula (Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Bosnia, Slovenia, Croatia and Romania) who are committed to working hard and attending all workshop sessions, regardless of age or their actual residence. *If you are a photographer from Albania, we offer separate scholarships, please see this page.

We encourage applications from those who are underrepresented in the photography industry including women (female-identifying), people from lower socio-income backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ and those from ethnic minority backgrounds. We also welcome applicants from a range of educational backgrounds and therefore do not require a minimum formal qualification.

Applications

Successful applicants will be chosen based on their ability to demonstrate their commitment and motivation in pursuing a career in photography. The Magnum Learn team will consider both cohesive and compelling bodies of work as well as how this opportunity will benefit applicants’ practices and personal development.
